Calling for a true and lasting peace, some 3,000 people from across the province, led by Former Communist New People’s Army Rebels who have just completed their three-day Peace Building Seminar, took to the streets of the City of Mati their campaign of hope to build peaceful communities during a Peace Rally held today.

Dubbed as Davao Oriental Day of Unity, Peace and Progress, this activity was staged and organized by the Provincial Government in cooperation with national line agencies and various peace and order stakeholders. Other participants of the activity consist of government workers, members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Youth for Peace, and People’s Organizations which are former Underground Mass Organizations.

Echoing President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for peace, the activity is being simultaneously conducted in other parts of Mindanao, which include Tagum City, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City, Koronadal (Marbel) City, Kidapawan City, and Butuan City.

In the City of Mati, Davao Oriental, participants trooped early in the morning at designated assembly areas for a motorcade. One group assembled at the Mati Park and Baywalk while the other gathered at the Matiao Gymnasium. Hoisting placards bearing peace signs, participants who are aboard on government vehicles, marched through the main thoroughfares of the city. Converging at the road leading to the Provincial Capitol, the participants trooped at the Provincial Capitol Gymnasium where the program proper will be held.

Basic services from the different Line Government Agencies of Public Service Outreach Program will be provided to the Former Rebels and members of other Peoples Organizations who used to be mass supporters of the CPP/NPA/NDF.

“It can be recalled that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is calling for peace and unity when he delivered his message to the Former Rebels and Indigenous People Leaders of Mindanao in Davao City last December emphasizing the sincerity of the government to support their communities thru different projects and livelihood programs. These rallies are all in response to the positive call of the President for all the stakeholders to rise and fight the communist threats in order to attain a just and lasting peace in their communities,” said a press release from the 701st Kagitingan Brigade of the Philippine Army.
