OFW’s support Piñol’s senate bid

DAVAO CITY – The Overseas Filipino Workers-Global Movement for Empowerment (OFW-GME) and Kilusang Pagbabago (KP) International expressed full support to eight senatorial aspirant including Emmanuel Piñol.

In a statement released by the group, the said lineup where Piñol was the top three pick said they believe that the new breed of senators will help and will provide better services for the Filipinos.

“Ang mga bayaning OFW natin ay napapagod din gusto na nilang umuwi ng Pilipinas upang maka piling ang mahal nila sa buhay kaya nagkaroon kami ng pagtitipon online upang mapakingan ang boses ng mga OFW. (Our OFW heroes are also tired and want to go home to the Philippines to be with their loved ones so we had an online gathering to hear the voices of OFWs),” the group said.

Piñol thanked the OFWs for their support as he vowed to be their voice in the senate.

During his stint as the chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), he has drawn up livelihood programs for OFWs who may have to come home because of the brewing crisis in the Middle East.

Among the interventions proposed by Piñol includes cattle, hog and poultry raising, sorghum, mango, and organic rice production, and agarwood propagation.

He underscored that the government should focus on livelihood and income-earning projects which will be offered to the returning OFWs.

Apart from that Piñol also partnered with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) in establishing an investment vehicle where OFWs can deposit their hard-earned money for modest earnings while at the same time helping rebuild the country’s economy.

“The country’s OFWs remit to their families an estimated PHP1.6 trillion every year, and many of them have been victimized by investment scams that offered incredible returns. Through an Investment Fund Program, OFWs could invest their hard-earned money in the various agricultural and fisheries programs,” Piñol said.

He added that the OFWs would be able to “perform a patriotic act of helping the Philippine economy, which is badly battered by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Among the programs that could be funded by OFW Investments is the Bamboo Industry Development Program, which seeks to utilize a million hectares of denuded and logged-over areas, watersheds, and sources of headwaters located in the eight major river basins of Mindanao.

Another initiative for potential funding, he said, would be the Mindanao Fish Cage Program that will support the island’s fishermen in establishing fish cages in the different bays and coves of Mindanao to contribute to food production.

Other programs for possible funding included the Mindanao Cattle Industry Development Program, the Mindanao Hog Industry Development Program, and other food production projects such as chicken raising, high-value vegetable farming, and high-value fruit tree farming were included in the OFW investment program.
